# REPUTATION.md, version 2: signals from your own records

Status: version 2 of the REPUTATION.md format. Version 1 files stay valid and read exactly as before. JSON Schema: https://reputation.md/schema.json. Skill: https://reputation.md/reputation.md. Terms: https://reputation.md/terms.

Provided as is, at your own risk. A signal is arithmetic over records you keep. Nothing here probes, pings, scans or fetches anything, uses third-party data, verifies anyone's identity, certifies or endorses anyone, or is a finding of fault.

## 1. What version 2 adds

Version 1 has three sections: `## Counterparties`, `## Events` and `## Rules`. Version 2 adds five sections of one-line records and the signal rules:

| Section | One line per | Comes from |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `## Observations` | an answer your own agent got from a counterparty | your agent's own logs |
| `## Agents` | a tether: which agent acts for which person or organization | what you were told or shown |
| `## Identity` | a claim: what someone says was checked about a party | what you were told or shown |
| `## Attestations` | a declared model, provider, compute class, region or established date | what someone declared |
| `## Connections` | a tie between two parties | your own dealings |

Every record is the user's own record. The `## Agents` and `## Identity` lines are the same as in REFERRALS.md version 2, so the family shares one model.

A file is version 2 when its frontmatter says `reputation: 2`. A file that says `reputation: 1` but holds a version 2 section or rule is still read, with a warning to set `reputation: 2`. A version 2 file adds the kind `person` to `agent`, `service`, `store` and `firm`.

## 2. Line grammar

A version 2 record is `- <head>: <part>; <part>; ...`. The head ends at the first colon followed by a space, so ids like `agent:books-3` and times like `14:05:00` keep their colons. Each part is `key value` (or `key: value`). Labels are lowercase letters, digits, `.`, `_`, `/` and `-`, 1 to 64 characters. Dates are `YYYY-MM-DD`. Evidence is a sha256 (64 hex characters) or, where stated, an https URL.

### Observations

`- <counterparty> <time>: <ok | failed | timeout>; latency <ms>; endpoint <label>; prefix <address prefix>`

- `time`: ISO 8601 with a zone (`Z` or an offset). Stored in UTC, like `2026-10-21T14:05:00Z`. Times that are not real (February 30, hour 24) are errors.
- `latency`: milliseconds, 0 to 3600000. A negative latency is an error and the value is dropped.
- `prefix`: an IPv4 prefix of /24 or wider, or an IPv6 prefix of /48 or wider, with every host bit zero. A full address, a longer prefix, or a prefix with host bits set is refused: the value is dropped and the line gets an error that names the prefix to write.

### Agents (tethers)

`- <agent id> for <principal id>: scope <labels>; since <date>; until <date>; evidence <sha256 or https URL>`

The principal must be declared under `## Counterparties`, as a `person`, `firm`, `store` or `service`. A tether is active on a date when `since` is on or before it (or absent) and `until` is on or after it (or absent).

### Identity (claims)

`- <party id>: <claim> <value>; method <link | code | dns | file | document | vouch | self>; by <attester id or self>; on <date>; evidence <sha256>`

Claims are `email`, `phone`, `domain`, `profile`, `document` and `org`. Email and phone values are hashed: `h:` and the sha256 of the trimmed, lowercased email, or of the phone as `+` and digits. A `document` value is the word `checked`; never a number or detail from it. A `profile` value is an https URL; a `domain` value a domain name; an `org` value an id. A claim with no method, no `by` or no `on` date is an error.

### Attestations

`- <counterparty>: model <label>; provider <label>; compute <label>; region <label>; established <date>; method <self | operator_signed | provider_signed>; by <who>; on <date>; evidence <sha256 or https URL>`

At least one of model, provider, compute, region or established. Use generic labels you agree on, like `family-a`, `gpu-large` or `region-north`. No method or no `by` is an error; no `on` date is a warning (it reads as stale). A signed method with no evidence reads as `self`.

### Connections

`- <a> ~ <b>: context <client | vendor | partner | same_operator | referred | other>; since <date>; dealings <n>`

Stored with `a` before `b`; `client` and `vendor` swap when the order swaps (`client`: b is a client of a; `vendor`: b sells to a). `dealings` is a whole number from 1 (default 1). One line per pair.

### Signal rules (in `## Rules`)

## 3. Privacy

- Prefixes, not addresses. A file holds an IPv4 /24 or an IPv6 /48 at most. A full address anywhere in a version 2 file is an error and its record is dropped. `import_observations` cuts addresses for you and never returns the full address.
- Hashed contacts. A raw email address or phone number anywhere in a version 2 file is an error and its record is dropped. A hash hides a contact from a casual reader, not from anyone who can guess it.
- A prefix can still be personal data in some places. Keeping it is your responsibility.

## 4. The signals

Windows end at the close of `as_of` in UTC: a window of N days is [end - N days, end), where end is the start of the day after `as_of`. Records after `as_of` are left out. A signal with no data, or with fewer records than it needs, is left out of the profile; it is never read as 0.

1. **events**: the version 1 score and tier, unchanged. `score = 50 + 50 x (positive_mass - negative_mass) / (evidence_mass + 2)` with decay `0.5^(age_days / half_life_days)`. Counts when events >= `min_events`.
2. **uptime**: n = observations in the uptime window. `uptime_pct = 100 x ok / n`. `error_rate = (failed + timeout) / n`. `score = 100 x clamp((uptime_pct - uptime_floor) / (100 - uptime_floor), 0, 1)`. Counts when n >= `min_observations`.
3. **responsiveness**: samples = the latency of the ok observations in the uptime window, sorted. Nearest rank: `p = the value at rank ceil(p / 100 x samples)`, 1-based. `score = 100 x min(1, latency_target_ms / p95)` (100 when p95 is 0). Counts when samples >= `min_observations`.
4. **streaks and outages** (reported, not scored): in time order, ok is up and failed or timeout is down. The current streak is the run that ends with the newest observation. An outage is a run of down observations, from its first one to the next ok observation, or to its last down observation when none came yet (ongoing). The longest outage is the longest by minutes, then by observations, then the earliest.
5. **consistency** (IP consistency): n = observations with a prefix in the consistency window, in time order. For each family f (IPv4, IPv6): top_f = the most frequent prefix (ties: the one seen first), changes_f = the times a prefix differs from the one before it in that family. F = families seen. `top_share = sum of count(top_f) / n`; `changes = sum of changes_f`; `stability = 1 - changes / (n - F)` (1 when n - F is 0); `score = 50 x top_share + 50 x stability`. Also `distinct_prefixes`, `span_days = max(1, (newest - oldest) in days)` and `changes_per_30_days = changes x 30 / span_days`. Counts when n >= `min_observations`.
6. **age**: `first_seen` = the earliest date among the counterparty's events, observations (UTC date) and connection `since` dates, on or before `as_of`. `established` = the date its attestations declare, the strongest method first (provider_signed, operator_signed, self), then the newest `on`. `age_days = as_of - first_seen`; with `age_from: declared`, `as_of` minus the earlier of the two. `maturity = 1 - 0.5^(age_days / maturity_days)`; `score = 100 x maturity`.
7. **identity**: claim weight = `identity_weights[method]` (0 with no method), at most `identity_weights.self` when `by` is `self` or the party itself. `strength(p) = 1 - product over p's distinct claims of (1 - weight)`. Tether factor = 1 with evidence, 0.5 without. `identity = 1 - (1 - strength(x)) x product over x's active tethers of (1 - factor x strength(principal))`; `score = 100 x identity`. `tethered_to` = person when an active tether's principal is a person, else organization when one is a firm, store or service, else untethered (not_applicable for a person, firm or store with no tether). Counts when x is an agent or has a claim or an active tether.
8. **attestation**: the own declaration is the counterparty's newest attestation with method `self`, `by self` or `by` itself. Each attestation: signed = a signing method with evidence (else read as self); fresh = has an `on` date and `as_of - on <= attestation_max_age_days`; each field it states is matches, differs or not_declared against the own declaration. `value = attestation_weights[method as read] x (1 if fresh, else 0.5) x (0 if a field differs, else 1)`; `score = 100 x the highest value`.
9. **graph**: `trust_rank` (section 5). `score = 100 x trust_rank(x) / the highest trust_rank`. Counts when trust_rank(x) > 0: no path from a seed is no evidence, not distrust.

**Composite trust profile**: `composite = sum over the counted signals of signal_weights[s] x score / sum of their weights`; `coverage = counted weight / all weight`. The strongest and weakest are the counted signals with the highest and lowest score (ties in the order of the list above). The band reads the composite against the tier minimums (trusted, standard, watch, below_watch). It is not a tier: the event tier still sets what may be spent without asking.

## 5. trust_rank

A random walk with restart over your own connections: trust starts at your seeds and spreads along your ties, with a fixed number of steps so every reader gets the same numbers.

1. Nodes: every id in `## Connections` plus every seed, sorted.
2. `w(i, j)` = the `dealings` on the line for i and j, both ways. `W(i)` = the sum of `w(i, j)`.
3. Seeds: the request's, else `trust_seeds` from the rules, else every counterparty whose event tier is trusted (weight 1 each). `s(i)` = seed weight / the sum of seed weights; 0 for other nodes.
4. `r0 = s`. Each step: `r(k+1)(i) = (1 - d) x s(i) + d x (sum over j with W(j) > 0 of r(k)(j) x w(j, i) / W(j) + s(i) x sum over j with W(j) = 0 of r(k)(j))`.
5. Stop after exactly `trust_rank_iterations` steps. No convergence test.
6. A path's weight = `s(seed) x product over its steps (u to v) of d x w(u, v) / W(u)`, over simple paths of at most 4 steps. `trust_graph` returns the three heaviest from any seed.

## 6. What attestations and identity claims are and are not

They are records: who says what was checked or declared, how and when, with a pointer to evidence. They are not verification. Nothing here checks a signature, a document, a domain, a model or a machine. "Signed" means only that a line names a signing method and points at evidence. A strong identity score means strong records under your own weights, not a known identity. Ask the person you work for before you rely on any of it.

## 7. Conformance

- **Level 1, reader**: parses all eight sections, refuses full addresses and raw contacts, and returns the canonical JSON of `parse_reputation` (keys sorted, records sorted, absent values null) that validates against /schema.json.
- **Level 2, checker**: level 1 plus every check of `check_reputation`, with the same errors and warnings.
- **Level 3, scorer**: level 2 plus every signal, the composite and trust_rank with the formulas above, matching the test vectors to the stated decimals.

## 8. Versioning

The frontmatter says `reputation: 1` or `reputation: 2`. A reader that knows only version 1 skips the new sections, so a version 2 file degrades to its events. The canonical JSON of a file with no version 2 record or rule is exactly the version 1 object, so its sha256 does not change. Formulas carry a method version (`signals/1`, `profile/1`, `graph/1`, `attestation/1`, `import/1`); a change to a formula gets a new one and a changelog entry.

## 9. Test vectors

All as of 2026-10-22 with the default rules unless stated.

**Data provider** (`api.data.example`, the `signal_report` example, `min_observations: 5`): six observations, ok at 180, 220, 950, 200 and 240 ms and one timeout; prefixes 203.0.113.0/24 five times and 198.51.100.0/24 once, in the order A A A B A A.

- uptime_pct = 100 x 5 / 6 = 83.3333; error_rate 0.1667; uptime score 0 (below the floor of 90).
- latency sorted 180, 200, 220, 240, 950: p50 = rank 3 = 220; p95 = rank 5 = 950; responsiveness = 100 x 800 / 950 = 84.2105.
- consistency: top_share 5 / 6, changes 2, stability 1 - 2 / 5 = 0.6, score 41.6667 + 30 = 71.6667; span 1 day, 60 changes per 30 days.
- longest outage: 1 observation, 2026-10-21T10:00:00Z to 11:00:00Z, 60 minutes.
- age: first seen 2026-10-21, 1 day, maturity 1 - 0.5^(1/90) = 0.0077 (score 0.7673).
- attestation: provider_signed with evidence, fresh, model and compute match: value 1, score 100.
- composite = (2 x 0 + 84.2105 + 71.6667 + 0.7673 + 100) / 6 = 42.7741, coverage 6 / 12 = 0.5.

**Bookkeeping agent** (`agent:books-3`, the `trust_profile` example): tethered with evidence to `books.example`, whose domain claim by dns weighs 0.8: identity = 1 - (1 - 0) x (1 - 1 x 0.8) = 0.8, score 80, tethered_to organization. Events delivered on 2026-08-20 and 2026-09-20 and late on 2026-10-20: event score 61.6, standard. Age 63 days: maturity 1 - 0.5^(63/90) = 0.3844.

**trust_rank on five nodes**: edges a ~ b (dealings 2), a ~ c (1), b ~ c (1), c ~ d (3), d ~ e (1); W = a 3, b 3, c 5, d 4, e 1; d = 0.85; 20 steps.

- Seed a (weight 1): a 0.3220, b 0.2262, c 0.2573, d 0.1604, e 0.0340. Graph scores: a 100, b 70.26, c 79.92, d 49.82, e 10.56.
- Seeds a and e (weight 1 each): a 0.2120, b 0.1641, c 0.2594, d 0.2385, e 0.1259.
- Heaviest paths from a to e: a > c > d > e with 0.85^3 x 1/3 x 3/5 x 1/4 = 0.0307; a > b > c > d > e with 0.85^4 x 2/3 x 1/3 x 3/5 x 1/4 = 0.0174.

**Prefixes**: `203.0.113.7` is refused (write 203.0.113.0/24); `203.0.113.7/24` is refused (host bits); `198.51.100.0/25` is refused (narrower than /24); `2001:db8:1:2::/48` is refused (write 2001:db8:1::/48); `2001:0DB8:0001::/48` reads as `2001:db8:1::/48`. `import_observations` cuts `2001:db8:5:1::20` to `2001:db8:5::/48`.
